Finalising adoption
Where parents do not revoke their consent to their child's adoption, this is what happens to finalise the adoption of a child:
- Our department considers the child's specific needs and selects the most suitable family from a list of approved prospective adoptive parents in Queensland.
- After suitable prospective adoptive parents have been selected for the child, arrangements are made for the child to be placed with the adoptive parents and an Adoption Order is made in favour of the adoptive parents.
- After an Adoption Order has been made, the child is provided with a new birth certificate, naming the adoptive parents as the child's parents.
- The child's original birth details no longer appear on the child's birth certificate.
- The child's adoptive parents become the child's legal and permanent family after the Adoption Order has been made.
