About the education programs
A sound understanding and knowledge of the needs of adopted children will be considered in the assessment of a couple as suitable adoptive parents.
Our department provides education programs for couples who have expressed interest in being assessed as prospective adoptive parents for children in Queensland or overseas, and who have been invited to progress to the assessment stage.
Education programs provide couples with information:
- to help them develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary adoption issues, including the nature and process of adoption
- about legal issues relating to adoption
- about general parenting, to assist them to prepare for the responsibilities associated with becoming adoptive parents.
How can I access the education program?
Separate education programs have been created for prospective parents wishing to adopt a child from Queensland or born overseas.
While couples are encouraged to take advantage of face-to-face education programs when they are available, online education programs are also available:
- Intercountry adoption parent education
- Local adoption parent education (coming soon).
Both the face-to-face and online education programs aim to provide couples with detailed information about:
- the operation of the adoption programs
- specific country information (where relevant)
- assessment processes
- issues relevant to meeting the needs of children adopted from Queensland or overseas
- adoptive parenting.
What will I learn?
As part of the education program, prospective adoptive parents will be asked to reflect upon relevant adoption issues and undertake recommended readings.
The learning objectives of the education program are to:
- provide an opportunity to learn more about intercountry or local adoption
- provide an opportunity for prospective adoptive parents to begin the process of evaluating their own knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to intercountry or local adoption
- create an awareness of the issues associated with adoption
- provide prospective adoptive parents with further information about adoption and what this means for them and their extended family, prior to making a decision to proceed with an expression of interest
- ensure that prospective adoptive parents are provided with the same information, regardless of their location, across the state.
