Overseas country eligibility requirements

Overseas countries may have specific eligibility criteria for prospective adoptive parents wanting to adopt a child from that country.

Only couples who meet eligibility criteria in Queensland can express an interest in being assessed as prospective adoptive parents for a child from an overseas country. This also applies where the eligibility criteria in Queensland is more restrictive than the eligibility criteria of the adoption authority in the overseas country.

In some instances, the eligibility criteria of overseas adoption authorities are more restrictive than those prescribed in Queensland legislation. In these instances, prospective adoptive parents are still eligible to have their names entered in the Expression of Interest Register in Queensland. However, they will not automatically qualify as prospective adoptive parents for children from these countries.

Once eligibility is established, couples must be approved as prospective adoptive parents for a child from a specific overseas country before their application is forwarded to the adoption authority in that country.

Overseas country adoption programs

Individual country adoption programs and the placement needs of children in particular countries can change with little notice. We will contact prospective adoptive parents about significant changes and developments in these programs, and advise if these changes affect their expression of interest.

For further information on overseas country adoption programs, refer to Overseas country information or contact our Adoption Services Queensland Unit.
