Assessing a couple's suitability
Assessing a couple's suitability as prospective adoptive parents is complex, with information from a variety of sources required to complete the assessment, including:
- personal and family experiences
- personal qualities and strengths
- life skills and knowledge
- a proven ability to respond to challenging life events in a positive way.
This information provides evidence of whether a couple is likely to have the capacity and competence to meet the needs of a child requiring an adoptive placement.
Other information that is considered during assessment of a couple's suitability to be approved as prospective adoptive parents includes:
- the couple's criminal history
- references
- child protection information recorded by the Department of Child Safety
- each partner's family profile
- the couple's participation in education programs or acquired knowledge and skill sets
- information provided in relation to eligibility requirements, including medical reports
- in-depth assessment undertaken by an assessor for Adoption Services Queensland
- other relevant information.
