Australian Citizenship

Once an Adoption Order is made in favour of an adoptive couple, Australian citizenship is automatic.

You may apply to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIC) for a Declaratory Certificate of Australian Citizenship for your child. There is a fee for this certificate.

It is important to note that:

  1. it is possible for Australian citizens to hold dual citizenship. While some overseas governments have no objection to dual citizenship, other governments will cancel the child's nationality if the child becomes an Australian citizen. Further information about the list of countries that do not allow dual citizenship can be obtained from DIC.
  2. Australian citizenship is required for an Australian passport to be issued for an adopted child.
Further information can be obtained by visiting the DIC website.
