Adoptive parent support groups
Participation in adoptive parent support groups provides practical opportunities for prospective adoptive parents to find out more about adoptive parenting, and access information and support from parents who have adopted children from overseas.
Adoptive parents and families report that participating in support groups:
- helped them to complete tasks associated with their adoption application and prepared them for adoptive parenting
- enabled them to share experiences and feel supported by families who are parenting adopted children
- provided a source of information and advice about adoption issues
- provided opportunities for them to learn more about other cultures
- provided opportunities for continued learning about their child's culture and for their child to develop their cultural identity after placement
- provided opportunities for the adoptive parents and their child to socialise with other families and children who have been adopted from overseas
- provided support during the application process, the child's placement and after the Adoption Order was finalised.
Prospective adoptive parents are encouraged to find out about the services provided by support groups.
