Fiji
The Fijian-Australian Intercountry Adoption Program operates under a bilateral arrangement. This is a very small program and greater preference is given to couples of Fijian or Indian descent. Very few children have been placed under this program in recent years.
Specific eligibility criteria
- One prospective adoptive parent must be at least 25 years of age and at least 21 years older than the child requiring placement.
- There is no minimum requirement for the length of a couple's marriage.
- The Australian authority is required to determine the stability of the marriage.
- Existing children in the family is acceptable. However, there is a preference for placing children with a childless couples.
Information about children requiring adoptive placements
- Some children requiring adoptive placements are under two years of age. Older children with special needs may also require placements.
- Children are usually of Fijian-Indian descent.
Costs
- The approximate costs of this program are A$10,000 including fees charged by the adoption authority in Fiji, airfares, accommodation and legal costs. A stay of at least 10 days is required when travelling to meet the child.
