Salary and entitlements
Child Safety Officers (CSOs) can earn up to the following salary levels (as at July 2008):
- PO2 salary range: $1765.90 - $2260.20 per fortnight ($46,071 - $58,967 per annum)
- PO3 salary range: $2374.40 - $2592.90 per fortnight ($61,946 - $67,646 per annum)
Learning and development
All newly appointed CSOs attend an intensive training program. To prepare officers for their work, the training uses examples of real scenarios and hands-on activities that mirror the real work environment.
After the initial training course, team leaders and specialist trainers will support new officers to complete an on-the-job training and assessment program. Newly appointed permanent CSOs are required to serve a 12-month probationary period.
Promotion and career opportunities
Our department offers a range of opportunities for career advancement and transfers between zones.
We provide opportunities to develop your career in casework, administration or policy. For example, you could specialise as a CSO, or work in areas such as:
- sexual abuse counselling
- adoption services
- alternative care
- court services.
Working in rural and remote communities
If you are working in a rural or remote area you may be eligible for up to 10 days extra leave per year, annual return airfares to a designated costal centre, and a locality allowance in certain remote areas.
Annual bonuses and other rural and remote incentives may apply depending on the location of appointment.
