Budget 2005-06

The State Government has reconfirmed its commitment to build a world-class child safety system in Queensland, through a $123.1 million funding boost to the Department of Child Safety in the 2005-06 State Budget, announced on 7 June.

This year's operating budget of $394.8 million represents a massive 45.3 percent increase on last year's budget ($271.7 million).

The budget incorporates growth funding of $53.2 million for child safety reform projects launched since the March 2004 release of the Blueprint.

An additional $61.7 million has been allocated to meet the demand for child protection services, which has increased rapidly since the launch of the Blueprint.

An extra $28.8 million will be spent on employing child safety officers and support staff.

Child Safety will allocate $9.4 million to Indigenous Recognised Agencies working with the department to reduce the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in protective care.

A total of $1.4 million will be allocated to departmental initiatives to strengthen local partnerships with the non-government sector.

An additional $25 million in capital funding over two years ($19.2 million in 2005-06) will continue the expansion of child safety service centre accommodation for staff statewide.

The 2005-06 budget will assist the Department of Child Safety to move closer to fulfilling its vision to produce 'confident children and young people who are valued by society, especially those children and young people who have been harmed or who are at risk of harm'.
