Budget 2007-08

The Queensland Government has pledged $551.3 million in the Department of Child Safety's 2007-08 budget to strengthen services for the some of the state's most vulnerable children and young people.

The pledge means funding for child protection in Queensland has more than doubled since 2004-05, when the department's operating budget was $271.7 million.

The 2007-08 budget provides new recurrent and capital funding of $58.7 million and $17.3 million respectively over four-years. Included in this funding is $12 million in recurrent funding and $10.4 million in capital funding for 2007-08 alone.

Highlights of the 2007-08 budget include:

Residential care facilities
  • $36.4 million for capital works programs including $3.6 million (of which $1.2 million is new funding) for the development of residential care facilities to address placement needs.
Therapeutic and behavioural support services
  • $20.9 million recurrent and $6.4 million capital funding to enhance therapeutic and behavioural support services to help children and young people in out-of-home care overcome the trauma of abuse.
Indigenous communities
  • $19.1 million recurrent funding and $15.5 million capital funding over four-years ($2.1 million and $7.6 million respectively in 2007-08) to strengthen child protection services in Indigenous communities. This will include the establishment of a first placement house on Palm Island as part of the Government's five point plan for Palm Island. The first placement house will assist with keeping Indigenous children and young people within their communities when they are removed from their families in response to a child protection matter.
Recordkeeping
  • $16 million over four-years ($4 million in 2007-08) to progress recordkeeping initiatives.
Babies and toddlers
  • $12 million over four-years ($3 million in 2007-08) to recruit specialist staff under the One Chance at Childhood initiative which focuses on the safety of babies and toddlers.
Care options for children with complex needs
  • $4 million over four-years ($1 million in 2007-08) for non-government partners to deliver out-of-home care places for children in care with complex and extreme needs.
