Our services

Our department is responsible for ensuring children and young people up to 18 years of age are safe and protected from harm when their parents cannot provide the necessary levels of care and protection. We provide:

Service Description
Services for children and young people at risk

This includes receiving and assessing information, offering family support services, providing short-term protective intervention and seeking a court order.

Protecting children at risk of harm requires immediate and serious attention. This needs to occur in a timely way to prevent concerns becoming more serious. Effective protection of children requires community members reporting their concerns to the department.

Services for children and young people in care

We have partnerships with foster and kinship carers in the community to provide safe, supportive and quality care for children who may be unable to live with their parents for varying periods of time. This includes providing longer-term protective intervention, coordinating case management and arranging out-of-home care services.

Foster carers are everyday people from all walks of life who have an important and valued role in the community. They care for children of different ages, cultural and religious backgrounds. We provide a range of support for our carers including training, support and financial allowances.

Adoption services

We provide both local and intercountry adoption services, and post-adoption services for release of information. This includes consent, assessment of prospective adoptive parents through to placement, post-placement supervision and release of identifying information or objection to release of information.
