Education support plan (ESP)
What's an ESP?
It's about figuring out how to help you get the most from being at school.
In the plan there'll be info about:
- what you need for your education
- what help you might need
- who can help you and how this will be done.
Why should I have one?
- so you can plan what you want from your education and how to overcome problems you might be having
- so you can get support that you need to meet your educational goals.
When will I get an ESP?
- when you enrol at a school or
- when your school is told that you have been placed in out-of-home care with a foster or kinship carer or in a residential placement.
Who may be at the meeting to develop my ESP?
- school staff (teacher, principal, deputy principal, guidance officer)
- child safety officer (CSO)
- carers
- parents or family members (if this is okay)
- you.
What will we talk about at my ESP meeting?
- your educational goals and plans
- what you're good at
- what you want help with
- what you need at school to reach your goals
- sport and friends.
When is my plan reviewed?
- at least once a year or when anything happens in your life that may affect your plan.
How can I be involved?
- you can go to the meeting
- you can tell your CSO or carer what your goals are and what you think about your education
- at the meeting about your ESP you can ask questions like:
- what support can I get to meet my goals?
- who can help me?
- you will get a copy of your ESP
- if you don't want to go to your ESP meeting, you will still get a copy of your ESP and info about the outcome of the meeting
- to find out more about ESPs you can talk to your:
- CSO
- teacher, school guidance officer, year coordinator, or other staff from your school
- carer.
