Viewing and saving documents

This page provides information for users needing assistance to display, download, save or print documents linked to this website. This website may contain some or all of the following types of documents:

FlashPaper files (.swf)

This website uses Macromedia FlashPaper technology to allow online browsing of some electronic documents (e.g. back issues of 'Building Blocks' magazine). Where we use FlashPaper, the same document is also made available in Adobe PDF for your convenience.

To view FlashPaper documents, you need to have the Macromedia Flash Player 6 or later browser plug-in installed on your web browser. This plug-in is installed as a standard component of most recent web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape or Mozilla Firefox). If you don't have this plug-in, you can easily download Flash Player free from Macromedia.

Where FlashPaper is used on our website, it will usually be displayed initially as an image within a web page. The image display the Macromedia FlashPaper logo in the top left corner and a search and tools menu across the top. For easier reading, you may wish to maximise the document in your browser window. You can do this by clicking the small screen icon (Screen icon) in the top right corner of the document.

You will find controls in the same area to enlarge or reduce the page size and to go forwards and backwards in the document. You can also print each page individually using the print icon in the same area.

Portable document format files (.pdf)

This website uses Adobe Acrobat PDF files to distribute electronic documents such as forms, brochures and other publications. Throughout this website, all PDF documents are marked with the text 'PDF' with the file size shown to help you estimate download time.

To view and print a PDF file, you will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed, which is available for free-of-charge from the Adobe website.

To view a PDF file:

  1. Select the link of the document that you want.
  2. The PDF document will load into the reader.

Note: The PDF file will open within the browser window once you have selected its link. However, for a more trouble-free way of accessing the file, you can save the file to your hard drive. You can then open it again later without going online to find it, and it prints more effectively.

To save a PDF file for later viewing:

  1. Right-click the link for the document you want.
  2. Selecting Save target as… in Internet Explorer (or select Save link as… in Netscape or Firefox).
  3. Select Save (make sure you note where you have saved it).
  4. Use the Adobe Acrobat Reader view and print the file.

Adobe also provides a free, web-based service for blind and vision-impaired users where any PDF document on the Internet can be converted to HTML. For further information, refer to: Online conversion tools for Adobe PDF document.

If you are not able to access a PDF document for any reason, please call (07) 3224 8045 or TTY (07) 3012 8655 to arrange access to the document in an alternate format.

Zip files (.zip)

Zip files are archives used for distributing and storing one or more files. Usually the files archived in a zip file are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster.

To open (unzip) a zip file, you require file compression software. Many computers come with the software pre-installed. However, if you do not have it already you can find software that allows you to open zip files from the Internet by searching for 'extracting zip files' in a search engine.

To save a zip file for later use:

  1. Right-click the link for the item you want
  2. Select Save target as… (or select Save link as… in Netscape or Firefox).
  3. Select Save (make sure you note where you have saved it).
  4. Use your file compression software to open the zip file.
