Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) System
The SCAN system provides regular forums for our department and other government and non-government agencies to share and assess information about complex child protection cases, and to plan and coordinate the delivery of services to children and young people in need of protection and their families.
The SCAN system does not have distinct decision making authority, as individual agencies retain responsiblity for their actions.
The SCAN Assessment and Management Team (SCAN AM Team) is the initial point of referral for all cases to be discussed within the SCAN system.
The SCAN AM Team consists of representatives from:
- Department of Child Safety (lead agency)
- Department of Education, Training and the Arts
- Queensland Health
- Queensland Police Service
- Recognised entities
Other government and non-government agencies may also be invited to participate in discussions of particular child protection cases if those agencies have specific knowledge or expertise which will contribute to the discussion.
Once the SCAN AM Team has reviewed all available information about a child and their family, they will make recommendations about actions to be taken to ensure the child is protected from harm.
These recommendations may include intervention by one or more agencies, the formation of a SCAN Community Implementation Team (SCAN CI Team) or case closure.
A SCAN CI Team is recommended when a child's protective needs requires intervention by multiple government and non-government agencies. The SCAN CI Team is formed to ensure better coordination of service delivery at the community level.
