Child Safety Practice Manual
The Child Safety Practice Manual provides a comprehensive set of procedures that guide and inform the delivery of child protection services by the Department of Child Safety. The current content is being systematically reviewed. The following chapters have been revised and released:
The revision of the practice manual also includes a new look for the website.
The new format is set out below.
- Overview, accessed when you click on the chapter, which includes:
- Purpose of the chapter and the phase of child protection intervention.
- Key steps, the overarching key steps for undertaking the phase of child protection intervention – these are broken down further to more detailed procedural steps within the chapter.
- What ifs, these are located at the end of the chapter and are procedures for matters related to the child protection phase, but may not relate to all cases, and are used when relevant. They are numbered from most common to least common.
- Standards, the key departmental actions that must occur for each phase.
- Practice skills, critical areas for reflection by staff when undertaking the steps.
- Authority, the legislative authority for departmental action.
- Key steps, which break the key steps down into all content areas for the chapter.
- The content for each key step: this provides the procedural information for all steps and the 'what ifs'?
- Resources:
- Forms and templates, used by staff in their day-to-day work.
- Departmental resources, guide staff and assist them to understand their role, for example, practice papers, practice resources and guides.
- External resources, information provided to staff from our partners and other external sources and websites.
For information about the practice changes included in the revised chapters, refer to the updates page.
There are now practice resources attached to each of the revised chapters. These resources can be accessed within the procedures, under resources in each chapter or via the Resources section.
